Where does faith reside?
This is a very difficult question to answer. I have ventured into a very difficult topic. I hope I will be able to make some driving points.
The Search
When someone is told to have faith, he or she begins to search for faith within himself or herself.
Unstable bridge
Let me give an example. Suppose we have to cross a foot bridge which wobbles with slight wind. Would you be comfortable with crossing this bridge? I think we will think twice before deciding to take the first step.
Stable bridge
Let us change this scenario, Suppose we have to walk over a strong concrete bridge then we will have no second thought about crossing this bridge. We can walk or run over this bridge because we believe that this bridge is strong one.
Reasoning
Therefore considering both of these scenarios, let us reason out the exact location of faith. Any guesses?
The Seat
I think you are getting my point. The seat of faith is in the object of faith. I hope I am able to convey my thoughts.
Faith and object of faith
The point I am trying to drive home is that, the faith is always resident on the object of faith. We have faith to get operated by the hands of an experienced surgeon but will not have faith to undergo similar procedure performed by an inexperienced surgeon.
Measure of faith
So when we speak about “having faith in God” we think more from our perspective. We think that we have to possess the “faith.” We labour towards increasing the measure of our faith.
Trustworthiness
Actually we should focus on what is the object of faith. Who is the one whom we have to believe is pivotal. The important thing is whether the object of faith is trustworthy.
Faith in God
Having faith in God: Here God is central. We are called to believe and trust God. It is Faith IN God. Having faith in God is having total confidence in God’s power and ability. Having faith in God is not equal to having confidence in your faith. Our faith can be shaken but God remains same forever and ever. Amen
2 Timothy 1:12 NASBS
For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.
Look at God
Therefore stop looking at your faith. Rather learn to trust God. Have faith in God. So our faith resides in God who is the only object of our faith.
1 Peter 1:21 NASBS
who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
