The beginning of Χριστιανός

Have you ever heard of Χριστιανός?

Oh yeah. It’s a Greek word. It is pronounced as Christianos. In simple words it means a Christian. Oh you knew it? That’s great.

Do you know what is the meaning of Christian? The answer is so simple. It means partisan with Christ. Also means a follower of Christ.

How many times?

How many places do we find the word Christian mentioned in the Holy Bible? I was surprised to know that the word Christian is mentioned only thrice in the new testament. (Acts11:26, 26:28; 1Peter4:16)

Why less?

Why is it mentioned so less times? The answer is very simple. There was no necessity. The followers of Jesus Christ comfortably referred to themselves as disciples of Jesus Christ.

How many times the word disciples occurs in the Bible? The results are stunning. The word Disciples occurs 229 times in new testament!😲

Who coined the name?

It is believed that the disciples never called themselves as Christians and they were labelled as Christians by the unbelieving world around them.

The name Christian wasn’t given out of appreciation or recognition. The disciples were labelled Christians out of disliking. Just to differentiate them from others. It was meant to disregard the followers of Christ.

The Christian community liked this Idea and looks like they immediately adopted this new name.

The beginning

Acts 11:26 NASBS
and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And for an entire year they met with the church and taught considerable numbers; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

This is the first instance when the disciples were called Christians.

The popularity

Acts 26:28 NASBS
Agrippa replied to Paul, “In a short time you will persuade me to become a Christian.”

The king Agrippa knew about this group called as Christians. He understood that Paul’s discussion is going to persuade him to accept Christianity. The name Christian was quite popular, even kings knew about this faith.

The glory

1 Peter 4:16 NASBS
but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name.

Apostle Peter said that if you are suffering because as a Christian then glorify God through this experience of suffering for being a Christian.

Whatever name we may prefer to call ourselves! The most important thing is to consider is, whom are we glorifying?

May God bless us all and get himself glorified through our individual lives.

Shalom 🕊️ from the Bible blogger 😇

Some people get offended when you say you are not a Christian. I am a follower of the Way! Follower is another word for disciple. Jesus is the way! a Child of God is a good label. but others have labeled me Christian, but it is not a name I take for myself. I am a disciple of Christ! Follower of the way! Child of God. those are the labels I claim myself. But honestly I like to be called Michelle. or known as a woman who loves God with all her heart!

Thank you and God bless you too! I think The Way should of been capitalized in everything I wrote. Which was another name Christians were called before they were called Christians. “Followers of The Way” Jesus is not the “only,” way HE IS THE WAY! Only implies an option. There is no option! ONLY JESUS! Many Christians are followers of Paul and will take the words of Paul over the Words of our Savior. which just in my understanding Paul did not die for us and Paul writes for us to consider such things. but a lot who take the Christian labels don’t even read the Word. and with out the WORD it is impossible to follow Christ for Christ IS THE WORD! The WAY! anyways God bless you friend! Shalom! I appreciate your post too!
